I have always talked about running a half or full marathon, but after a couple years of talking the talk I knew this would be my year. I thought running was neither fun nor interesting whatsoever. That all changed for me three and a half years ago I was in a rough patch of my life, and my sister talked me into a local 2 mile race. I had no training whatsoever and planned on walking most of the 2 miles. As we stood there at the starting line with about 1,500 other people my nerves began to grow. I just kept thinking “What am I doing here...Do I even belong here?”
Overwhelmingly, I heard the gun shot to start the race and this adrenaline rush just took over. Everyone started running forward in a mad rush and I couldn’t help but join the stampede. A race that I intended on walking I ended up running most of it. When I crossed the finish line as hundreds of people stood there cheering for me I felt a sense of accomplishment that I had never felt before.
Furthermore, after many 2 mile, 5K, and a couple 5 mile races on the brink of my 30th birthday I decided to join The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training program for my first half marathon. They will offer me the much needed training regimen, coaches, nutritional advice and a great group of runners who offer plenty of support during my journey. All I had to do in return was raise money that will go towards research aimed at finding a cure for Leukemia, Lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and Myeloma.
I hope you will share my passion throughout this process as I write about my training experiences and the great group of new friends I will have at the end of this.
