Over the past so many years the craze has been low carb diets. I definitely put myself in the carb lover category. To me a good Italian restaurant is carb heaven, by far my favorite food. I can fill up on the bread alone at those places before my meal would even come.
About 4 years ago I was in the obese category for my height. I got to a point in my life where I needed to make a difference. I started the nutrisystem meals right after if first came out. That changed everything for me … I lost 60 lbs in about 4 months and changed my entire diet especially my portion control. Four years later I am only 10lbs above my lowest weight after starting nurtrisysem. After I stopped the nutrisystem meals I kept the same concept, but with regular food. I also followed the low carb craze.
Now that I am running I need to readjust my diet all over again. Carbs now need to be my best friend. Sigh. Carbohydrates are the single most important fuel for the runner. The type of diet that is good for runners is the same healthy diet recommended for everyone. A healthy diet is one that is high in carbs, low in fat, and sufficient but not excessive in protein. Should follow the 60% carbs, 25% fat, and 15% protein rule.
Runners have to stay clear of the 40/30/30 diet or the Adkins diet. Runners will feel sluggish with those diets from the diminished energy.
Carbs are stored in muscles as glycogen, the primary fuel you need to keep moving. When this source runs out your energy wears out, and so do you. You will wear out often after 90 minutes or two hours of running. And since I am not the fasted runner I am sure it will take me longer then that to finish my race.
So now that I have to incorporate more carbs in my diet I am back to square one with everything I have done diet wise the past few years. I’m about to fall off the no carb wagon!!!
